How to grow Garlic

Now when it comes to garlic i use it all the time for my home cooking and for my cooking channel.  It is just one of those indispensable ingredients you just can't live without in the kitchen And today i am going to show you how to grow it in your own home from the garlic that you buy from the supermarkets. Now we are going to start of with our garlic of course.  Now the first one you want to pick is you want the garlic that still has the roots in the bottom.  Now unfortunately this one doesn't have the roots because i took them off about a week ago but the general rule is get the garlic that has the roots still attached.  Now this is an older garlic and it is starting to sprout from the top but I'll show you how to do it with or without the sprouts as it makes no difference, So i'm going to take one clove off.  One clove will grow into one whole garlic.  So you just want to take the outer shell off, just like that.  Then what you are going to be left with is the bear garlic clove and there's two sides, you have the bottom there and that's the top side so that's the side you want to plant facing up. So just make a small little hole, just stick it in and cover it up.  That's all you really have to do. And here we have another garlic clove and as you can see it has already started to sprout from the top so obviously we are just going to put that into the ground with that part facing up, and cover it in just like that.  now to grow these garlics in using a large container so depending on how hot or cold it is you want to water them every few days if they are in a container because being in a container they do dry out a lot faster.  And of course make sure there are holes in the bottom of the container for drainage But if they are in the ground you can easily leave them a couple of extra days between waterings It really all depends if you have a big garden or you live in a small flat and want to grow some on the windowsill or on the balcony.  And of course once you have planted them just give them a good watering in. And once they have sprouted a bit higher say three centimetres or so just add a mulch on top use any mulch you want, sugar cane, bark its really up to you but it just helps keep the moisture in inside the soil.  And it will also mean that you can water them lists often as well.  So once the garlic is planted it should take about six months, they are slow growing one so it should take about six months until they are ready. Basically you will know when they are ready to pick simply when the foliage on the top starts to die off.  And by planting enough of them you want need to buy any more because what you are going to do is keep a couple of garlic aside, you are going to let them dry out a little bit and then you gonna re plant them and grow even more garlics from the same garlics that you had planted.  But of course just make sure you plant enough to last six months.  So once you get into a proper rotation you will have plenty of garlic throughout the whole year.  So that is how easy it is and how cheap it is to grow your own garlic no matter what type of house or unit you have.
